The National Basketball League (NBL) is in turmoil. The league’s past four champions have pulled the pin, and will not play. The new league only has seven confirmed entries, no TV deal, no government funding and it is still totally up in the air as to whether we will have a season by October.
Basketball Australia (BA) is struggling to put a league together in time for what’s supposed to be the 2009/10 season. Over the last two years, the NBL’s last four championship winning teams – namely the South Dragons (2008/09), Melbourne Tigers (2007/08 and 05/06), Brisbane Bullets (2006/07) and Sydney Kings (2004/05) have all pulled out of the competition for varying economic reasons. read article »
Formula One motor racing giant Ferrari is considering quitting the sport, after losing its bid to stop controversial changes to Formula One racing by the sport's governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
The team, as well as Renault, Toyota and Red Bull, were seeking an injunction against FIA's new rules through the French legal system. read article »
The Australian Football League (AFL) has released its seventeenth consecutive annual comprehensive study on injuries in the AFL competition - the 2008 AFL Injury Report – finding 2008 to be the lowest year on record for the incidence of head and neck injuries. read article »
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has called for greater respect for women after ABC’s Four Corners program exposed a Cronulla Sharks sex scandal involving several players in Christchurch, New Zealand, seven years ago.
The scandal sparked furore about rugby league’s culture of group sex and degradation of women, and the ‘boys will boys’ and ‘code of silence’ policies that protect players from repercussions of their off-field antics. read article »
The worst meningitis epidemic to hit Africa in years has claimed the lives of over 2500 people, according to UNICEF. Doctors Without Borders said the worst is over after vaccinating a record 7.5 million people against the bacterial infection. read article »
