In the lead up to the state election, Opposition Leader Colin Barnett has scrapped the controversial idea of constructing a canal from the Kimberley to Perth to boost water supply. How did this plan compare with the new desalination plants proposed and being built by the Carpenter Government, and will the plants be free from the environmental and cost concerns that killed the canal plan and handed Barnett defeat in the 2005 election?

Early last week Colin Barnett told ABC radio, “the last election effectively became a referendum on the canal and the people of Western Australia voted against it and the Labor Party won.” read article »
