Drapht Dominates With Debut

Published: 22/08/2008

With his recent album release and upcoming concerts, local hip hop artist Drapht has established a strong name for himself in the hip hop community.

His high-spirited tunes have caught the imagination of Perth crowds this year and there are big expectations that his talent will see him 'go national'.

Since starting out in 2003 he has consolidated his skills over three albums, Brother’s Grimm being his latest release.

This release is a huge step forward for both him and WA’s hip hop scene.

Jimmy Recard, the first song from the new album, has received airplay on the popular radio station Triple J.

Other than this hit, the album contains a diverse range of songs, and he covers a number of different topics relevant to young Australians, including sex, alcohol and addiction.

He has also tried to create an album that anyone can relate to by tackling issues such as politics and indigenous land rights.

WA-born Drapht, a.k.a Paul Ridge, comes from a musical background, with his father being a drummer. He was introduced to music from a very young age and had his first taste of hip hop at the age of eight.

Drapht became a vital part of Perth’s premier hip hop crew Syllabolix at the age of 17.

He’s already performed alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including the Hill Top Hoods, Expansion Team and Downsyde. He’s also featured as a guest-MC on the Hilltop Hoods' platinum-selling album The Hard Road.

His unique voice and original flow has set him apart from other Australian hip hop artists. This has been noticed as he’s been signed by Australia’s biggest independent hip hop label Obese Records.

So, if you’re interested in a night of entertainment and catchy melodic tunes, head down to The Brighton Hotel in Mandurah on August 21, The Hyde Park Hotel in West Perth on August 22 or the Railway Hotel in North Fremantle on August 23 to see Drapht perform songs from his latest album.

You can get tickets from or from Mills Records in Fremantle.
